School Guidance and Counselling placement practice in schools includes: One-to-one Career Counselling and Personal Counselling (in partnership with a professional School Guidance Counsellor); Group work in personal/social, educational and career development; Pastoral Care/Guidance classes. To support student guidance counsellors in relation to placement practice, small supervision groups are offered throughout the year. These aim both to mirror and to prepare for the practice of professional supervision in which guidance counsellors engage.
The reflective practice focuses on the central importance of accurate self-awareness as a condition for effective counselling. It seeks to encourage student guidance counsellors to become reflective practitioners. It highlights four areas of development: self-knowledge, interaction with others; professional knowledge; coping styles. Journalling is an ongoing, distinct feature of this module.
