The Primary School Curriculum states that ‘learning is most effective when it is integrated’. This module will examine the theory and practice underpinning the integration of language, literacy, mathematics and scientific enquiry across the curriculum and will explore ways of developing conceptual knowledge and understanding through a cross-curricular approach and the integration of other subjects into these subject lessons. It will also focus on supporting students towards preparing for SP lesson plans and schemes of work.

In terms of Language and literacy, this module further develops students’ understanding and deployment of relevant theories for the effective linkage, integration and differentiation of language teaching and learning introduced in the Language and Literacy module in Year 1. Students’ competence in adopting an integrated approach to teaching language, literature and literacy across all curriculum areas will be enhanced. They will examine, select and apply a wide range of strategies to support children’s literacy, communicative skills and engagement with literature across the curriculum.

In terms of mathematics and scientific enquiry, this module further develops students’ understanding and deployment of relevant theories for the effective linkage, integration and differentiation of Mathematics & Scientific teaching and learning introduced in the Mathematics & Scientific Enquiry module in Year 1. Students’ competence in adopting an integrated approach to teaching Mathematics & Science will be enhanced. They will examine, select and apply a wide range of strategies to support children’s mathematical & scientific learning through an integrated curriculum approach.


Students will be enabled to employ interdisciplinary teaching and learning approaches for coordinating children’s learning through the reflective selection and creative deployment of literature. Students will investigate and analyse the potential of spoken, written and multimodal texts in the English and Irish languages to act as important media, creative experiences and learning stimuli for children across all subject areas.

Students will explore the role and impact of ICT for educational issues around language, literature, literacy, numeracy and scientific enquiry. Assessment for and assessment of learning regarding the teaching and learning of language, literature, mathematics and scientific enquiry are key components of this module.
