The module will examine a variety of approaches to teaching reading and how these approaches draw on the science of reading. It will explore how to assess pupils’ development in reading and how to choose effective teaching pedagogies based on this assessment to cater for pupils with differing needs.

Current national and international research in the teaching of reading will be examined. Changes in national literacy policy will be outlined.

Case studies will be used to develop strategies for supporting pupils with reading difficulties. Digital literacy will be explored to support the teaching of reading.

This module will prepare student teachers for teaching, learning, reflective practices, and assessment of reading in primary schools.
