Module ENTREPRENEURSHIP, MONEY MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Module code: EDF471
Credits: 2.5
Semester: 1 and 2
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Overview Overview

This module prepares student teachers to design and deliver an entrepreneurship programme for 5th and 6th class pupils in primary school.

The purpose of the entrepreneurship programme is twofold:
(a) to give the children a platform to express their skills in Maths, English, SPHE, IT and Visual Arts and
(b) to place them in situations where they learn 21st century skills such as entrepreneurship, co-operation, critical thinking, money management, innovation and decision making.
Throughout the elective, students will engage with literature available on creative and critical thinking skills in order to conduct a literature review. Students will engage directly with the entrepreneurship programme and the Primary School Curriculum in order to promote cross-curricular links and develop a programme for their school visits. As part of the module, students learn how pupils form companies and apply for jobs within the company based on their talents and strengths. Pupils are led through the entrepreneurial process from creation, design, market research, marketing to production and sales.
Each company designs and produces a brief animated movie. Pupils also learn to ‘trade’ as they ‘pitch ‘their ideas to a Venture capitalist to secure funds for shares in their company. A ledger is kept by the pupils throughout the workshop.
Marketing takes place through poster design and short drama sketches.
