This bilingual module traces the development of Children’s Literature in the 20th century up to the modern day.
It examines the distinctive qualities of children’s literature as a genre, explores the relation of didacticism and entertainment in novels for children with reference to different historical periods, and considers the changing concepts of the child, concluding with a strong focus on contemporary literature for children.
Over the course of the module five English-language and five Irish-language literature primary texts (novels and drama) will be surveyed from an interdisciplinary perspective, using literary, historical, psychological, and cultural approaches.
