Module CUMAS NA GAEILGE

Module code: EDF447
Credits: 2.5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Máire Nic an Bhaird (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

Cumas na Gaeilge will develop the student’s necessary written and oral competence in the Irish language to teach the Irish language effectively in T1 and T2 primary school settings.

Oral and written Irish-language assessments will be informed by the Common European Framework of Reference for languages. The student’s current-level competence in these areas will be referenced from the previous academic years and this will be used in supporting students to identify and meet their own learning targets. Students will develop their communication, digital skills, presentation skills, and grammatical accuracy across different language registers and genres. Students are supported to develop the language needed to critically design, deliver and reflect upon the content, communication, cognition and cultural components in CLIL lessons, utilising the TFG Fillteán Foghlama housed in TAISCE as a guide. Outdoor learning and use of the local environment, underpinned by Froebelian philosophy, guide students’ grammatical detective work to aid independent lifelong-learning amongst students. Self and peer assessment skills are developed and digital tools such as discussion fora and digital journals, are used to aid students in their reflective journey through the Irish language.

Space is provided to encourage professional dialogue between students and HEI lecturers in order to strengthen and effectively understand students’ identity as Irish language learners and educators.
