Module code: EDF350
Credits: 2.5
Semester: 2
Quota: 18
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: Yes
Coordinator: Aoife Titley (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module is designed to provide students with an opportunity to engage with emerging issues in education for sustainable development (ESD) from three distinct perspectives: the political, the socio-economic and the environmental. It will examine the politics, ethics and science behind our relationship with the environment and wider global community. The module will support student teachers in reflecting on their rights and responsibilities as global citizens and introduce them to creative pedagogical approaches to explore new global realities with children in the primary classroom. This ESD module will build upon prior learning in Global Citizenship (1) and Global Citizenship (2) modules in Y2 and Y3.

This module will utilise a range of creative, active and experiential methodologies to explore global justice issues related to sustainability. Child-centred pedagogical approaches will be modelled to embed inclusive approaches to quality teaching and learning in school for all pupils. The use of the outdoor environment will be promoted both on campus, and during an off-site immersive study visit.

The following topics will be explored:
• Human rights
• Ethical consumerism (food and fashion)
• ‘Bigger than self’ concepts: Interdependence and solidarity
• Biodiversity
• Climate justice and climate action
• Peace education
• Zero Waste
• Sustainability in the context of the Global South

This ESD module will also develop education partnerships on campus, for example by involving representatives from Trócaire, the Green Campus Initiative and the College Biodiversity committee in relevant sessions. It will also further develop our existing partnership with the Cloughjordan Eco-Village education team as well as a local primary school, who will be invited to campus for a station teaching exercise.
