Module PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL SKILLS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING 2

Module code: EDF234
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Triona Stokes (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module seeks to support the development of the teacher as a self-reflective,
autonomous professional who demonstrates the four values outlined in the Code
of Professional Conduct for Teachers, and the teacher as a lifelong learner in relation to the continuum of teacher education.

Connections are forged between theory, practice and reflection through the introduction of the four ethical values of the Teaching Council, along with the theory of group dynamics, as part of the various professional relationships that are built during the course of School Placement.
The Code of Professional Conduct (Teaching Council, 2016) embeds the four ethical
values of integrity, care, respect, and truth within teaching itself. This module considers their relationship to the educational philosophies and practices of Friedrich Froebel. Student teachers will engage critically with literature pertaining to relevant concepts and theories drawing on national and international literature.

The course focuses on advanced communicative skills through a range of lenses and
the use of seminar-style discussions. A strong focus is placed on professional relationships with particular reference to partnerships. Partnerships within EDF234 are located within the school as a learning community and encompass all working relationships. For example, student teachers collaborate with a peer on paired placement and are supported to communicate effectively with their host teacher/ Treoraí and HEI/School Placement Tutor.

From a personal competency building perspective, student teachers are afforded opportunities to enhance their own literacy and numeracy in the following areas: Maths, written and oral Irish, Music Education, Literacy, ICT, and Visual Arts Education. They will then choose and study one of those areas, which they have not previously studied. Students will contribute to their e-portfolio Taisce as part of an on-going professional development process.
