Module code: EDF133
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Triona Stokes (FROEBEL EDUCATION), Eddie Costello (FROEBEL EDUCATION), Tony Sweeney (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

The course focuses on developing the communicative skills of the student teacher, introducing the theory and practice of active listening and the skills of presentation. Academic writing purposes, styles and skills are compared, and the practice of academic referencing is introduced.
Strong links are identified between theory and practice by means of engagement with pertinent national and international literature which emphasise the school as a learning community.

Student teachers will engage critically with literature pertaining to teaching itself through the investigation of relevant concepts and theoretical and conceptual frameworks. This can lay the foundation for the development of sound self-critical learning with ample opportunities for individual and collaborative reflection, in fostering a creative mindset among student teachers as reflective practitioners.

From a personal competency-building perspective, student teachers are afforded opportunities to enhance their own literacy and numeracy in the following areas: Maths, Written and Oral Irish, and Literacy, in addition to Music Education, ICT, and Visual Arts Education.
They will then choose and study one of those areas.

Student teachers will be introduced to new and emerging technologies for teaching and learning. Their personal confidence and competence with digital skills is a focus of practical workshops, through the creation of their Taisce to support the process of portfolio-based learning.
