Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No

Overview Overview

This module is designed to complement and integrate with the module EDF130 Language 1/Teanga 1 through students’ engagement in discussion seminars and reflection activities.

Student teachers will become familiar with the communicative approach to the teaching of Irish and will examine its implications within the context of the Irish educational system. Particular emphasis will be placed on the adoption of Froebelian approaches and methodologies for the teaching of Irish in the junior classes in the primary school classroom. Digital resources for the teaching of Irish in junior classes, including online narrative texts, will be evaluated.

Student teachers will explore Irish-language literature as adult learners/readers, and as classroom teachers. Student teachers will be exposed to a variety of literature including appropriate genre for development of the concept of reading for pleasure, and also of language and literacy in the Irish language in primary school.

Reflective practice is embedded in the module, where student teachers reflect on themselves as language learners, as language teachers and on their prior engagement with Irish-language literature.

Through the language seminars, student teachers explore the integrated nature of language teaching and learning, as advocated in the Primary Language Curriculum (DES, 2019). Through offering this space for professional dialogue, student teachers will begin to explore their professional identity as a teacher of languages in schools.
