	Overview
	This module is designed to introduce, explore, and analyse the vital role of children�s environments in relation to their well-being, health, development, and learning. The module is underpinned by the recognition that early year�s environments must be seen in the context of children�s rights and needs. It is vital that these spaces offer quality experiences and home from home atmospheres. Throughout this module, indoor, outdoor and local area environments are given due attention as students are supported to consider these environments and their affordances to the developing child. Addressing the concept of Universal Design and guided by the Aistear The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework and S�olta, the National Quality Framework, environments will be explored in relation to Policy and Legislation, Sensory/Motor Needs, The Affective Environment, Curriculum Approaches, Pedagogical Values, Emerging Interests and Play Needs, Layout, Materials and Activities.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Analyse environments from the perspective of the rights of children to quality indoor, outdoor, and local area environments and identify the unique affordances of indoor, outdoor, and local area environments and how they intertwine to provide holistic experiences Appraise the legislative requirements relating to the physical environment of an ECEC setting and explore the main elements of Universal Design and its impact on early year�s provision Critically examine theories of physical and affective environment as sites for encounters and nurturing relationships and consider the concept of the environment as the 3rd teacher Compare and contrast the varied environments of a range of curriculum approaches and articulate how the environments provided supports the chosen curriculum /pedagogical approach being implemented Design a range of environments that support implementation of Aistear The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework, including the selection of quality layouts, resources, loose parts, materials and equipment that meet the changing needs of the developing child Summarise and discuss the opportunities and challenges of a risk benefit approach to early year�s environment design
