	Overview
	Guidance counselling involves a special relationship of trust and requires the highest standards of professional, ethical and reflective practice. This module explores areas of competence required of the guidance counsellor. Content includes, ethical and legal perspectives on child protection and safeguarding, critical incident management, information processing and data management, assessments and evaluation; consultation and referral, collaboration, teamwork and accountability, and the process of planning and managing a whole school guidance service. Throughout the module, students will engage in critical reflection on their personal and professional values, self-knowledge and relational styles. Through an ongoing process of reflective journaling and discussion, students will be supported to develop accurate and compassionate self-awareness, as a necessary condition for effective guidance counselling.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Articulate a clear understanding of the role of the guidance counsellor as leader and manager of a school guidance counselling service. Explain how a school operates as a system, and how the guidance counsellor's role is effective in that system. Show a confident understanding of the management and work procedures for the school guidance service. Operate strategies and skills which will enable effective collaboration with staff, parents, and external agencies. Understanding their role within the whole-school guidance counselling team. Appreciate the legal and ethical implications of their role in the schools. Demonstrate knowledge of pastoral care and social, personal and health programmes in schools. Appreciate how school guidance counsellors can exercise appropriate leadership in school contexts. Reflect critically on their practice through use of logs, reflective journal and professional dialogue. Show that an integration of new understandings and awareness of self and others has been facilitated. Demonstrate an openness to constructive criticism and a willingness to take appropriate action. Capacity to engage with key policy and professional/ethical documents related to guidance counselling
