Guidance counselling involves a special relationship of trust and requires the highest standards of professional, ethical and reflective practice. This module explores areas of competence required of the guidance counsellor. Content includes, ethical and legal perspectives on child protection and safeguarding, critical incident management, information processing and data management, assessments and evaluation; consultation and referral, collaboration, teamwork and accountability, and the process of planning and managing a whole school guidance service. Throughout the module, students will engage in critical reflection on their personal and professional values, self-knowledge and relational styles. Through an ongoing process of reflective journaling and discussion, students will be supported to develop accurate and compassionate self-awareness, as a necessary condition for effective guidance counselling.
