Module Objective: On completion of this module students will be able to critically analyse historical battles and campaigns. They should be able to examine them within an appropriate historical context and be able to relate their findings to relevant debates about strategic theory and the utility of military force. Students should also be able to articulate the key debates within strategic studies and be able to use these to examine and explain features of the contemporary security environment. Module Content: The module will include lectures, tuition and seminars relating to the subjects of military history, campaign analysis, strategic studies and contemporary security. Students will participate in two formal group presentations in which they must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of these topics. They will also complete a 2,500 word essay. During the course of the module students will also take part in a military-history field trip in which they engage in a number of campaign analysis discussions and debates.
