This module's objectives are to provide students with a basic understanding of the main processes of contemporary urban organisation and change by (a) examining case studies of selected key issues and (b) exploring the major investigative approaches used in urban social analysis.
In this module the city as a place of social, cultural, political, economic and physical change is examined by investigating various aspects of the contemporary urban condition, including the problems associated with growing inequalities and segregation. The forces shaping the modern city are explored by linking the study of urbanisation and urbanism to a wider view of how society works. The approaches geographers and other urban analysts use to study urban areas and urban social problems will also be studied.
