The module allows students to develop a theoretical, analytical and practical approach to the use of modern spectroscopic techniques for structure determination, namely Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). The physical principles underlying the spectroscopic methods will be outlined. Significant attention will be paid to instrumental factors that influence the outcome of NMR and MS experiments. The manner in which the spectroscopic methods can be brought together to solve structural problems will be presented and given as problem sets. Examples of applications from both organic and inorganic chemistry will be used.
This is a DRHEA module which is delivered externally in UCD. These courses change from year to year. Check the website http://www.drhea.ie/disciplines.php?page=62&modules=on and register with the contact person listed there.
