Credits: 15
Semester: 1

Department: BIOLOGY
International: No
Coordinator: Prof. Bernard Mahon (BIOLOGY)
Overview Overview

Students who have taken a research-intensive project (min 5 weeks duration) in the previous 12-month period may gain accreditation for that research in lieu of a conventional research project. Typical examples of such research include (but are not limited to) an HRB summer student scholarship, a Maynooth University SPUR scholarship, Irish Cancer Society Summer scholarship etc. For accreditation, students are required to: Either a) prepare a 2500-word literature review on their research topic, provide a 10 minute oral presentation of their research findings to a department academic, and a short written thesis outlining their research goals, methods, findings and outcomes OR b) a 10 minute oral presentation of their research findings to a department academic plus a draft scholarship application in the format of the IRC studentships (or other student identified source) with an identified investigator/mentor.

Restricted entry: Biology department will oversee allocation. Third year grades, and appropriateness of prior research may be used to allocate students to modules.
A brief written statement of the prior research project will be submitted by student at start of year and be assessed by the year coordinator to assure appropriateness.
