• Review the scientific literature pertaining to a specific research question/topic.
• Prepare a literature review according to guidelines.
• Design a coherent experimental strategy to critically evaluate a research question.
• Perform experiments using the technique(s) learned during the project.
• Analyse and interpret the research findings in the context of exisiting literature in the field.
• Compile a research thesis in publication format detailing the background literature, methodology, results and implications of the research findings.
• Present the research work in the format of a scientific seminar.
• Have demonstrated transferable skills such as time management, critical thinking, experimental planning, problem solving and co-operative work.

• All students must pass the course on laboratory safety and general methodology at the beginning of BI421. Third year grades and a written statement of interest may be used to allocate research projects.
