	Overview
	Topics covered include: study of structure and function of research papers, critical reading of research publications: papers, reviews and other forms of scientific literature, assessment of quality of research publications, use of databases, use of spatial data and information, writing a paper summary, writing a paper abstract, writing up a biological technique, oral presentations, presentation of scientific information to the non-scientific community. Students taking this module cannot also take, or have taken BI312.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe the format and content of a research paper, a review paper and a chapter. Critically analyse the content of a research paper. Write a concise and accurate account of an environmental biology technique. Access, analyse and interpret spatial data from remote sources, including supplementary files from a published paper. Write detailed summaries of a number of scientific publications. Compose a succinct abstract for a piece of biological research. Interpret key considerations for presenting scientific research to a non-science audience. Undertake self-directed library research and study and take personal responsibility for their learning.
