This is the second of a two-semester sequence in practical research preparation for postgraduate students in anthropology. The module’s objective is to prepare advanced postgraduate students to confront a broad range of ethical dilemmas that may be encountered in anthropological field research and anthropological writing. The module also prepares students for compliance with institutional regulations regarding research ethics as deployed through university ethics committees. The module addresses the epistemological and philosophical issues underpinning the particular character of anthropological research, and through the use of case studies, confronts students with the broad range of potential ethical dilemmas that may be encountered in the field and in representations of research findings. The module also addresses issues such as negotiating informed consent in long-term fieldwork; anonymity and confidentiality; professional codes of ethics; and dealing with institutional ethics committees.
