On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Develop an awareness of standard conventions in scholarly scientific writing
• Identify techniques of manipulation used in misrepresenting scientific findings
• Translate scholarly findings for a broader audience

• Students will engage in anchor lectures that feed into small group tutorials emphasizing active learning activities, 'low-risk' writing, and other methods to achieve learning outcomes.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Assessment will be comprised of formal writing assignments. Formative feedback will be used with frequent opportunities for students to revise and rework assignments (based upon instructor feedback). Additional activities will be undertaken in small group tutorial sessions that involve collaborative analysis of texts and exploration of theoretical concepts. It is anticipated that these activities will assist students in better understanding the communicative methods used within the sciences and build upon their writing proficiency.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? Students who do not complete the two major assignments during the semester will have their results capped at 35%.
• Penalties: The resit option for this course is a supplemental assessment submitted for marking at the autumn exam board meeting which will consist of two written assignments and an assessment of students' theoretical understanding of course materials.

• The supplemental assessment of CA will consist of writing assignments that will be submitted through Moodle. Detailed instructions will be emailed to students following the release of official results.
