Mature Applicants 

Mature applicants are assessed separately to school-leavers. Mature applicants are 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time/flexible degrees the mature age is 21.

Mature applicants who have a disability 

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require support for any required written exercise/interview/ online video audition which may form part of your application assessment, you must complete an online request form and submit supporting documentation by 15 March 2026. Applications for alternative examination accommodation cannot be considered after this deadline.

Leaving Certificate Applicants

BA Bachelor of Arts – Media, Film & Cultural Studies – Double Major or as a Minor. Media, Film & Cultural Studies and one other subject to degree level.

1st year

• Take 15 credits of Media, Film & Cultural Studies (group 6)
• Plus choose 2 or 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the groups available (maximum 1 per group).

2nd & 3rd year

• Media, Film & Cultural Studies as part of a Double Major or as a Minor
• Continue with 1 of your 1st year subjects
• Optional 10 credit Elective in 2nd year

Students may apply to study overseas after second year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Year 1

MEDIA, FILM & CULTURAL STUDIES Subject Overview By studying Media, Film & Cultural Studies, you'll get to explore the ways that 'new' media like social media, AI, and digital platforms as well as 'old' media like film, television, print and radio shape your lived experience and learn how to engage effectively and critically with an increasingly mediated world. You will have the opportunity to research and analyse media genres like advertising and documentary, media audiences and users, media technologies and platforms like video streaming and TikTok, and you will develop understanding of how media shapes our ways of being in the world. You’ll develop your employability and professionalism through your exploration of media, film and cultural industries and working lives. This subject is focused on critical dimensions of media, film and culture, and you'll have opportunities to use practical and project-based skills on modules like Radio Production and Digital Content Creation. To develop more extensive skills in digital and audio-visual practice, you should apply to MH109 BA Media Studies.
