On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Construct compositions on a variety of subjects; summarise the meaning of texts, give examples of how phrases or sentences illustrate grammar rules; analyse short texts.
• Construct sentences and short texts based on grammatical rules; complete exercises using various aspects of grammar; employ vocabulary suited toa particular topic or area of language use.
• Identify how grammatical rules apply in a given structure; determine how rules aid in the conjugation of verbs and other grammatical constructions; detect patterns in the use of tenses, moods, voices, pronouns and other areas of language; recognize grammatical rules in use.
• Organise information in a coherent and meaningful manner; apply relevant linguistic concepts to phrases, sentences and short texts; write expressively at an intermediate level of linguistic complexity.
• Rearrange elements of phrases in a syntactically and grammatically correct manner; complete sentences accurately using the required linguistics skill; recognise expressions encountered in class; demonstrate the linguistic meaning and usage of expressions; manipulate phrases in the application of grammatical rules.
• Demonstrate intermediate linguistic competence; communicate ideas, opinions and feelings of medium complexity; show intercultural awareness.
• Complete continuous assessment and class assignments correctly; answer exam questions with relevant and precise information based on course work completed throughout the semester.
• Explain and summarise the meaning of written and audio texts.

• Three contact hours per week language class, and one contact hour per week conversation tutorial.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? If the Marks and Standards are not met or if the attendance requirement is not met.
• Penalties: A minimum mark of 40% must be achieved separately on both the oral and written components of the examination in order to obtain a pass. Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate). Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5 marks per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• 120-minute written examination and an oral examination. If a student has passed the written or oral examination at the end of the term, they are not required to resit that examination in the Autumn examination session, but all failed examinations must be retaken in the Autumn exam period. Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn period and contribute to the calculation of the grade for that exam session.

Achieve linguistic competence commensurate with CEFRL level B 1. A student achieving an overall mark of 60% or higher in this module will have demonstrated linguistic competence commensurate with EFR level B 1.
