Module SING IT LIKE SHAKIRA! LATINX STARS ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

Module code: SPA248
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Quota: 24
Department: SPANISH
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Rodrigo Lopez Martinez (SPANISH)
Overview Overview

How has Latinx identity become a cultural brand and multi-millionaire industry? How can we relate the dynamics of the global media to the political ambitions and social dilemmas of Latin America? This course will introduce students to some of the most relevant events in Latin American history by focusing on the lives and works of its most impactful celebrities. Our list will include music and movie stars such as Shakira and Jennifer López, athletes like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, but also political figures-turned-pop icons such as Evita and Che Guevara. In this way, we will regard Latin American cultural identity as inherently global, marked by the legacy of colonialism as much as by its contemporary circulation in the international media. We will examine the role of music, cinema, and entertainment as paradigmatic means of expressing and debating issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, and (neo)colonialism.
