On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Answer simple questions and offer some personal details, e.g. name, nationality, address, age, hobbies, in written and spoken form, and ask the same questions of another person;
• Extract key information from simple written, audio and video texts related to situations from everyday life that contain words and expressions dealt with in class;
• Write simple messages and communicate in a very simple way about situations related to everyday life and using vocabulary dealt with in class.
• Demonstrate some basic geographical and cultural knowledge of the countries where Portuguese is spoken.

• Could the result of this module be capped? If attendance requirement is not met.
• Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
• Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5 marks per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• If a student has passed the written or aural examination in the January sitting, they are not required to resit that examination in the Autumn examination session, but all failed examinations must be retaken in the Autumn exam period. Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn period and contribute to the calculation of the grade for that exam session.
