Module SPORT, LEISURE & POPULAR CULTURE IN THE SPANISH-SPEAKING WORLD

Module code: SPA212
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Quota: 24
Department: SPANISH
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr David Conlon (SPANISH)
Overview Overview

This module will provide students with the opportunity to explore the cultural, social, and political significance of sport, leisure and popular culture in the Spanish-speaking world. The module will focus on case studies, including events such as controversies surrounding the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and Spain’s victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup; celebrity personas such as Lionel Messi; and unique sporting/leisure cultural phenomena such as lucha libre wrestling in Mexico. The module will take an approach that is rooted in cultural studies, viewing sport and leisure themselves as cultural practices and as objects of representation through literature, film, internet and other media. Students will be provided with critical tools and frameworks that will enable them to engage in close readings of sport and leisure, and to thereby uncover how they relate to everyday life, history, ideology, and national identity.
