| This module introduces students to a sociological analysis of the development of the contemporary cityscape. It explores the changing landscapes of cities, with a particular focus on central landscapes, and the implications of these changes. The module is divided into three sections. Section one examines the changing urban landscape from industrialisation through to de-industrialisation and uses a range of case studies to examine the spatial and social implications of these processes. This section also examines the Utopian Modernists and how their responses to the conditions of industrialisation influenced our understanding of the city. Urban change is embedded in changing configurations of capitalism, and the global restructuring of capitalism, which will also be analysed. Section two examines the contemporary cityscape and explores this in relation to the post-industrial cityscape, the creative city, cities and sustainability and the divided city. Case studies from a range of cities will be used as examples. Section three examines processes occurring within the contemporary cityscape and critically examines topics such as gentrification, public space, the right to the city and greening the city. Key theorists, approaches to understanding the cityscape, case studies and a range of visual material are used to develop critical understanding and to provide visual examples. |
