On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Understand the major theories and key concepts in the sociology of children and childhood
• Critically assess how children shape and are shaped by social institutions such as schools, families, the state and global capitalism, with specific reference to social factors including race/ethnicity, gender and class
• Evaluate the empirical trends and patterns identified by sociologists exploring how societies come to construct children and childhood
• Develop an independent and critical perspective on the sociological analyses of issues such as: the history of childhood, kids' culture, children in families and schools, children as workers, the ''traffic'' in children, toys, children's myths and stories

• Penalties: Where applicable, the following penalties apply. If coursework is submitted late, 10% will be deducted. No coursework will be accepted 14 calendar days after the deadline. These penalties will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer/tutor prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.

• Where applicable, autumn resit students may submit continuous assessment work by a date before the autumn examination, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the autumn.
