• Explain and apply the major theories and concepts in the sociological analysis of the mass media.
• Detail and analyse the empirical trends and patterns in the relationship between media and society.
• Assess the role of both the state and the marketplace in shaping the modern media and culture industries.
• Develop an independent perspective on issues within the sociological analysis of mass media.
• Develop their own perspective on the potential of the mass media to act as an instrument of cultural integration.

• Penalties: Where applicable, the following penalties apply. If coursework is submitted late, 10% will be deducted. No coursework will be accepted 14 calendar days after the deadline. These penalties will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer/tutor prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.

• Where applicable, Autumn resit students may submit continuous assessment work by a date before the Autumn examination, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn.
