Module PHILOSOPHICAL THEOLOGY

Module code: PY409
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: THEOLOGY
International: No
Overview Overview

This module is comprised of two components. The first foundational aspect of the module treats philosophical theology from the point of view of an analogical metaphysics of creation. In do, it elaborates the distinctive understanding of the Catholic understanding of the God/world relation grounded in the freedom of God’s love and the correlative understanding of being-as-gift. This view is presented in contradistinction to the two major metaphysical presentations of the God/world relation in the history of Western philosophy: pantheism and theopanism. In arguing against the latter, the Catholic view of nature/grace will be explicated. The second, component of the module consist in an exploration of modern atheistic thinkers who challenge and deny the above view. Figures treated include: Comte, Feuerbach, Nietzsche (and Dostoevsky).

Indicative Syllabus:
• Introduction to the major metaphysical positions in Philosophical Theology.
• Catholic analogical philosophy of God
• Pantheism/theopanism
• Nature/Grace
• Modern atheistic movements and figures
