| To equip students with theoretical frameworks and practical case studies to explore the political processes, social practices and lived experience of creating and governing social transformation, a triple transition of climate sustainability, equality, and digitalisation. In four sections of this module students will examine societal attitudes towards social transformation in our contemporary world. The module will first introduce key concepts including theories of change, power, democracy, the sustainable state, and transformation. The module then turns to the process of creating demand for social transformation, a process that focuses on the importance of social power ‘from below’ including intersectional approaches to power and transformation. The module then explores challenges of decision making and implementation, and interrogates supply side politics and challenges of legitimacy for elite power ‘from above’. The module ends by re-examining theories of change and social transformation asking how we can imagine balancing strong sustainable states with strong democratic societies. |
