| On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: - Understand the theoretical understandings of democracy and pluralism as well as authoritarianism and totalitarianism;
- Have a good understanding of the threat landscape faced by democracies, especially in North America and Europe;
- Know how to read and use the rich data sets on the state of democracy produced by leading bodies/projects such as Freedom House, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Global Democracy Index, the Corruption Perceptions Index and Reporters without Borders;
- Understand how misinformation, disinformation and Artificial Intelligence are impacting on democratic polities, including elections and institutions.
