This module interrogates the nature of democracy in the 2020s and examines the different threats to democracy evident In the contemporary world. Focusing mainly on Europe and the United States, the module will examine the various crises of politics that have engulfed democratic states over the last two decades as well as the significant revival of authoritarianism. Beginning with the global financial crisis in 2008, the module will trace the rise of populist and radical politics and political parties and the impact this has had on the United States and European Union. It will use the empirical evidence gathered by international bodies such as Freedom House and Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) to trace the jurisdictional decline in democracy and ask whether democracy can survive the extraordinary challenges posed by disinformation and the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
