	Overview
	This module will look at migration in the context of the Irish language. It will consider movement within Ireland from Gaeltacht regions, paying particular attention to the foundation of the R�th Cairn Gaeltacht community in Co. Meath, and to the impact of migration on life on the Great Blasket Island. Migration overseas has also been a significant factor in the Irish language story, and Irish-language literature will be used, in translation, as a source of information and insight into emigration in the post-famine period. Consideration will also be given to the cultural importance of the networks created by those who travelled abroad, as attempts were made by many to keep the Irish language and culture alive.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe how migration has impacted on the Irish language, and on specific Gaeltacht communities. Identify key challenges that resulted in the relocation of the residents of the Great Blasket Island, and in the establishment of the R�th Chairn Gaeltacht. Understand the importance of the cultural networks created by many who left Irish speaking communities and travelled abroad. Analyse and evaluate some of the literature that informs our understanding of the history of migration and its impact on the Irish language.
