MU649 Music and Gender explores how musicology has been shaped by critical theories relating to gender (and sexuality). The module is delivered as five discussion seminars, each of which engages with particular theoretical frameworks. The module is broadly conceived in chronological terms. We start with the foundational texts of ‘New Musicology’ in the late 1980s and early 1990s—when feminist scholars began systematically challenging the marginalisation of women from the classical canon—and conclude by investigating twenty-first century feminist musicology in the USA, UK, and Ireland. Over the course of the module, we observe how the field of ‘music and gender’ has expanded over the decades: it is no longer necessarily synonymous with the study of ‘women and music’ nor is it limited to the study of classical composers or performers. The module addresses how gender may be analysed as part of an intersectional framework, paying attention to how gender-based discrimination overlaps with other markers of identity such as race, class, and sexuality.


LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the module you should be able to:
* Discuss theoretical concepts about gender and sexuality as they relate to music.
* Outline the broad history of how thought about gender and sexuality has evolved in
musicology from the late 1980s to the early 2020s.
* Apply theoretical concepts relating to gender, sexuality, and intersectional identity
topics, to various repertoires in Western art and popular musics, especially of the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries.
* Critique the intellectual and political strategies employed by scholars working on music, gender, and sexuality.
