In this lab-based module, students will be introduced to the practice of sound synthesis using analogue and digital hardware. The programme will consist of a study of classic synthesis components such as oscillators, filters, envelopes, and amplifiers, as well as hardware sequencers and other controlling devices. The principles of voltage control and MIDI (as applied to synthesisers) will be explored, and the students will be working on practical creative projects for sound design, as well as electronic music composition, performance, and improvisation. The module will also include some elements of hardware hacking for musical applications and an introduction to sound synthesis electronics.
