• critique current theories of music and text.
• evaluate the song style of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf and one composer of orchestral song.
• assess leading developments from early 19th-century drawing room song to Schoenberg's melodrama Pierrot Lunaire.
• critique Berlin Cabaret Song and consider the cultural climate that gave rise to it.
