On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• demonstrate proficiency in the interpretation of square and neumatic chant notations.
• accurately transcribe chants from key manuscript witnesses of western plainchant from 9th-12th centuries.
• intelligently evaluate any Latin chant with respect to the preparation required for solo or group performance.
• confidently function as a solo performer in a liturgical or concert context.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Total Marks 100%. Two written assignments totalling 20%; demonstrating familiarity with early manuscript notation and semiology. A Group Performance project accounts for a further 20%. Solo Performance (1 and 2) provides the main focus of the module (60%).

• Penalties: The Department regards deadlines as absolute and operates a system of penalties for late submission. See the Department Undergraduate Handbook for full details.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• Continuous assessment marks are carried forward to the autumn. Dissertations-theses, recitals and composition-music technology portfolios presented for the first time in the Autumn Supplemental Examination Session will be capped at 40% in the absence of fully proven mitigating circumstances.

• Admission (limited to 6 places) is by audition/interview which will take place at the beginning of semester one. Please email in advance to register your interest. A secure vocal technique is a pre-requisite.
