	Overview
	The academic dissertation is one of the �summer pathways� available to students undertaking an MSc degree within the School of Business. An academic dissertation provides students with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate highly specialised knowledge which is at the forefront of an area of work or study, as the basis for original thinking and research. An academic dissertation is distinguished from other forms of writing by its focus on analysing and understanding situations via a theoretical lens. An academic dissertation evaluates literature, makes comparisons, seeks explanations and offers conclusions all of which can be used to better understand the case in context, as well as the theory in general. Academic dissertations generally involve some practical primary data gathering by students, but can also centre on secondary sources. The Academic Dissertation summer pathway is best suited to those considering an academic or research career. Acceptance onto this pathway will, therefore, be based on a research proposal to be developed by the student. Places are limited. Students completing an academic dissertation will: identify a suitable research topic; set research objectives; locate, organise and evaluate the relevant authoritative literature; devise an appropriate research methodology; gather and analyse primary data; and offer relevant conclusions, recommendations and implications for the theory and future research.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Independently manage a sizable research project to meet project milestones, resolve academic and procedural complexities and manage communications with relevant stakeholders; Write a literature review using a systematic process of collection, synthesis and appraisal; Design an appropriate research methodology; Gather and analyse primary and secondary data relevant to a research question; Discuss findings in the context of the academic literature and the broader business context; and Apply and evaluate theory in a business context.

Continuous Assessment detail(s): a) Meetings with Faculty Mentor on advanced content exploring both required and self-directed reading material; b) Individual, student led design of research question, establishing the scope of the Dissertation, literature review, research methods, data collection and analysis, write up of report; evolution of project implementation, communicating with stakeholders and participants on collection of data, project process and recommendations. The MSc Dissertation assessment shall include: a written academic dissertation, consist of a document with research question, literature review, research design, analysis, findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Penalties: Students are expected to attend and/or organise all Academic Dissertation related lectures, seminars, supervisory meetings, and data related appointments. Standard School of Business penalties apply for late submission of assignments; 10% is deducted for each 24 hours (or part thereof) that an assignment, including the Academic Dissertation, is submitted after the official submission deadline. Personal exceptional circumstances policy of the School of Business and University may apply.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	If a student does not pass the Academic Dissertation, they may not repeat. They can, subject to permission, re-registration and fees, complete another dissertation in the next academic year.
