	The law of evidence is that system or body of rules which regulates the admission of proof in a court of law. This module examines these rules which govern the gathering of evidence at the pre-trial stage and its subsequent presentation in court. Critical topics include: basic concepts of evidence, functions of the judge and jury, admissibility, relevance, corroboration, rule against hearsay, character evidence, opinion evidence, and privilege. Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer. * Please note, students should NOT take LW324 if they have previously taken LW254, as the content is the same in both modules *

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Display an in-depth knowledge of the operation of the criminal trial and an ability to identify the key elements of the trial and appraise the fairness of a particular trial on an examination of given facts. Comprehend the principles relating to the trial and explain their operation in different circumstances. Comprehend the principles relating to the operation of the doctrine of privilege and give examples of the circumstances when these principles may apply. Analyse, debate and criticise the law in a particular area of evidence and draw conclusions as to its effectiveness and fairness. Interpret a given factual matrix in light of evidence principles, summarise the main legal issues involved and construct an opinion as to the legal position
