	Overview
	Students who take this module will explore key theories of crime and the criminal justice system from both an historical and contemporary perspective. Classical, biological, psychological and sociological explanations of criminal behaviour and criminal justice system responses to such behaviour will be explored. On completion of this module students will have a comprehensive understanding of key ideological underpinnings related to understandings of criminal behaviour and how such understandings influence state responses.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Display an in depth understanding of key criminological theories. Understand the historical development of theoretical perspectives and their relevance to broader social change. Critically evaluate the various explanations of crime with reference to criminological theories and the states responses.
