Module code: KD312
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Since early in the 21st century, there has been growing concern internationally regarding loss of land by subsistence farmers and livestock keepers to investors both local and foreign.
This module will explore the interaction of colonial legacies, land reform, land rights and investment patterns in land, with a special emphasis on the African experience.
The participants will gain knowledge of the historical background to recent investments in land and their impact on rural livelihoods, as well as the theories underpinning policies of international institutions and national governments.
Students will be able to analyse the role of national governments, global actors and civil society resistance in the transfer of huge tracts of land from rural populations to national and international investors.
