On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• • demonstrate a good understanding and knowledge of main developments in the history of the Balkans in the middle ages and the early modern period
• • demonstrate and apply understanding of the transformations which the Balkan societies underwent due to migration, war, imperial rule and transfer of ideas
• • demonstrate the capacity for independent thought in the handling of historical sources
• • critically engage with the relevant main historiographical debates, and develop their own ideas and positions in relation to them
