On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• have developed knowledge of the major formative developments in social, cultural, economic and political life that made Europe distinctly modern during this period;
• have developed knowledge of Europe’s evolving position and relationships in a global context;
• have developed skills in locating and interpreting primary and secondary source material relevant to a variety of aspects of European history in this period;
• have developed skills in collating and synthesising source material;
• have developed capacity for writing a coherent narrative;
• have developed capacity for presenting a report and essay that conforms to the professional citation conventions specified in ‘Rules for contributors to Irish Historical Studies’.

• There is a condition attached to this module. 1 A student must sit the examination If this condition is not met the module result is capped at a maximum of 35%.
• Penalties: The expectation is for full attendance by students. Module requires active in-person participation and/or essential practical exercises.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• 60-minute written examination. There will be no repeat of continuous assessment components. Marks awarded during the semester in respect of tutorial assignments will be carried over. The module condition (see Assessment Rules) still applies. 1 A student must sit the examination If this condition is not met the module result is capped at a maximum of 35%.
• University scheduled written examination (Autumn): 60 minutes, On-campus
