Module MAKING THE MODERN WORLD: THEMES IN HISTORY

Module code: HY122
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 1
Department: HISTORY
International: No
Overview Overview

This module will provide a broad-ranging overview of early-modern to modern history, focusing on a ‘big’ theme. In its first iteration, the module will focus on the theme of empire, but it could also be used to explore themes such as religion, war or emigration. The module will seek to provide a broad background knowledge which will be of use to students in providing context for the more focused electives they will encounter in years II and III. In addition, the module will encourage students to think, beyond national boundaries, about the ways in which national histories connect and to reflect on the ways in which processes such as imperial expansion, war or religious change have helped shape the world we inhabit today. The module will be supported by a continuous assessment programme, with assignments spread across the full semester, aimed at honing the intellectual and technical skills (researching, synthesis, interpreting a variety of sources, referencing and citation) that students will require in order to pursue the study of history in second and third years.
