	Overview
	This module begins with a brief overview of some of the basic linguistic, cognitive and sociocultural concepts informing Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Theory, before introducing students to the dominant methodologies of teaching/learning foreign languages, e.g. Grammar-Translation Method, Direct Method, Audio-visual Method, Audiolingual Method, Communicative Approach, Intercultural Approach and Alternative Methodologies including the post-methods era. In analysing the various methodologies, the salient issues of lesson planning, learner typologies, language learning strategies, learner autonomy and target-language usage will be discussed. IMPORTANT NOTE Normal entry requisites for MA in German.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Explain in broad terms basic linguistics, cognitive and sociocultural theories and principles of Second Language Acquisition, with particular reference to their relevance for the teaching and learning of foreign languages Summarise in general terms and compare the various methodologies used to teach foreign languages, referencing each methodology's salient issues Listen and contribute to in-class discussions in clear and correct German Critically evaluate secondary literature Write responses to exam questions, making convincing arguments in a clear and structured manner and giving examples where appropriate.
