LITERARY TRANSLATION

	Overview
	This module will focus on translating German-language literary texts, including (eg) excerpts from novels, dramas and short prose, into English. Students will be taught to be sensitive to elements of style, language, and tone in their translations.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Distinguish the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of a variety of German-language texts. Interpret German texts and reproduce their content in English, using sophisticated vocabulary and reflecting a high level of grammatical and syntactical correctness. Modify the English translation where fitting to ensure that it reads coherently and reflects appropriately the style of the original German text.

Continuous Assessment detail(s): 100% CA. This consists of (1) one short translation (German into English) submitted after the mid-term break (30% of total) and (2) a longer translation (German into English) with commentary in English submitted at the end of term (70% of total).

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
