Module code: GC336
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Quota: Restricted entry, contact department for details before registering
Department: ANCIENT CLASSICS
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Eoghan Moloney (ANCIENT CLASSICS)
Overview Overview

This module will provide a study period in an external setting (e.g. Athens, Rome). Students will visit for approximately 7-12 days to study various aspects of history and heritage via visits to various historical settings, organisations, and institutions in their contemporary and historical contexts. Typically, the module takes advantage of an association with the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) to give Maynooth students the opportunity to take part in a broad programme of visits to sites, monuments, and museums in Greece, as part of an introduction to the history, landscape and archaeology of this great country. Other trips to alternate venues may also be organised, depending on demand.
Prior to, and upon return to, Maynooth, students will have seminars with the department team to discuss the trip (2 seminars) and help them prepare final submissions for assessment (4 seminars).
Priority will be given to students taking Classical Studies for their degree. To that end, students taking this module should have passed both Level 1 Classical Studies modules - GC151 and GC152. Completion of a selection of Level 2 modules offered by the Department of Ancient Classics is also suitable.
NB - tours typically take place in the summer months and students MUST have gone on the study tour to take this module, which runs in Semester 1 of each academic year.

NOTE: This third-year option is available only to students who have not taken the GC233 Study Tour module previously.
