	Overview
	The module will begin with a survey of theories on first and second language acquisition. We will then consider multiple competencies in language learning, teaching culture with language, and how learners� characteristics affect their language acquisition. The module emphasises applied language pedagogy. We will design lesson plans, consider approaches to teaching and assessment, and strategise about common challenges. The module will also include a brief overview of French linguistics as it pertains to language teaching, with particular focus on major points of contrast with English.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Design effective lesson plans that address a range of competencies including speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Incorporate considerations of communicative competence, sociolinguistic competence, and learner typologies in lesson plans and curriculum design. Explain in broad terms theories on second language acquisition from behaviourist, innatist, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives. Reflect critically on their own teaching and thoughtfully observe others� teaching. Create and refine a proposal for the teaching and assessment of a specific topic in the French language classroom.
