On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Carry out individual research on a topic approved by the Coordinator and the Supervisor.
• Demonstrate awareness of the core skills required in research.
• Analyse key issues at stake in the chosen research topic, incorporating both primary and secondary sources into the body of the essay.
• Produce a well-structured, well-researched piece of written work in French (3,500-5,000 words), displaying evidence of personal insight.
• Compile and present a bibliography.

• Regular individual supervision by a member of staff in French Studies on a topic approved by the Coordinator and the Supervisor. Individual research, learning and investigation by student. Writing and drafting of final project under supervision. Students must attend a minimum of three meetings with their Long Essay supervisor. Supervisions are recorded for the attendance requirements in FR313A.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? Autumn repeat cap of 40% applied.
• Students must attend a minimum of three meetings with their research supervisor. This counts for the attendance for the long essay.
• Penalties: Late submission of the Long Essay will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. The Long Essay will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or compelling reasons will not be penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the deadline, and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).

If the long essay is on a literary topic, this module is recognised as a literature module by the Teaching Council of Ireland. It represents 5 credits of the minimum of 15 credits in literature required by the Teaching Council.
