In this module, students will reflect critically on the French language as an object of inquiry. During the first half of the semester, the module will offer an overview of the language’s structure through the study of its semantics, lexis, syntax, and morphology. During the second half of the semester, students will explore French phonetics and phonology, deepening their understanding of the normative sound system. With its emphasis on usage, the module provides insight into the way that language works. This will contribute to the improvement of students’ French language skills as well as provide a foundation for future study in linguistics.
