On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Recognise and effectively manipulate a range of tenses and other grammatical structures in the French language.
• Extrapolate information from a variety of written and audio texts.
• Derive and use new vocabulary from reading and listening exercises.
• Converse in French with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.
• Produce written texts that display an awareness of French syntax, a level of accuracy of approximately A2.2 level according to the European Framework and an ability to construct coherent arguments in a second language.
• Read short texts pertaining to topics in contemporary French society and culture.

• Could the result of this module be capped? If attendance requirement is not met, or if the aural examination is not passed.
• Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).
• Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or compelling reasons will not be penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• 2 hour written examination and an aural examination. If a student has passed the written or aural examination in the January sitting, they are not required to resit that examination in the Autumn examination session, but all failed examinations must be retaken in the Autumn exam period. Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn period and contribute to the calculation of the grade for that exam session.
